Still investigating this new place we have ended up it was time to venture out on the sea ice that covers most of the water around the island that Upernavik lies on.
Only where the tide is too strong, the open water is visible. – It is with caution we start our journey, because the ice can be very thin, a few centimeters, some places without being visible because og the snow that has fallen on top. We only walk where snow mobiles and sledges have passed by recently.
The sunday journey gave us a chance to view the town from further away. It is quite a sweet little multicolored enclave that stretches up and down the sides of the bare rocks.
Random formations
Also seeing the ice from sea level made me happy, because I got to se all the lovely random formations the snow and ice crystals make when they move, crack and grind on the sides of other objects.
I love these formations that move slowly but has a mind of their own and know what they want; to invade everything. Here is one possibility from the inside of our livingroom window.
When we arrived two days before the new year the ice didn’t cover the ocean yet, and the ice will keep getting thicker now that the sun is nearing the horizon; for some reason it will get really cold now.
Here is a little clip from our adventure on the ice
